Your Adoption Hospital Experience: the Choices Are Yours

Posted by Lifetime Adoption on September 26, 2015

It's your totally your choice how things will go at the hospital for your delivery (also known as "hospital preferences" or a "birth plan".)

You'll want to print multiple copies of your plan; if you share one with your Adoption Coordinator this ensures your wishes are known. You can also share a copy with the nursing staff on-duty.

Here are some questions to consider:

  • Who do you want to be at the hospital with you when you deliver?
  • Do you want your baby in the room with you, or would you prefer your baby be kept in the nursery with the adoptive parents?
  • After you deliver, do you want to be in a different area of the hospital away from the labor and delivery area?
  • How much do you want the adoptive parents to participate in the birth?
  • Do you want the adoptive parents in the delivery room or waiting outside?
  • Will you want newborn pictures that the hospital takes of your baby?
  • When you are discharged, do you want to wait until the baby leaves or do you wish to leave first?
  • Will you want newborn pictures that the hospital takes of your baby?

You'll want to make sure to let your Adoption Coordinator know when your labor starts and when you leave for the hospital (or when you get there). Your Adoption Coordinator will send paperwork to the hospital staff to ensure they have your hospital preferences and desires available and your wishes are followed. Give the labor nurse your adoption professional’s phone number and ask her to call them. Your adoption professional can notify the adoptive parents that you are in labor, or you may want to call them yourself.

Here's a short video that describes the choices you have for your adoption experience in the hospital:
