Telling Your Parents You're Pregnant? Get Our 4 Quick Tips

Posted by Lifetime Adoption on September 29, 2017

how do I tell my parents I'm pregnant?Telling your family about your unplanned pregnancy can make for an awkward conversation. Because they're shocked, your parents might say things that they probably don’t mean.

The idea of breaking the news to your parents that you're pregnant might be stressing you out, especially if you think they'll be disappointed in you.

Today, we're giving you 4 quick tips for getting through this conversation with your family:

1. Think About How You Feel About Becoming a Mom

Before you can talk with your parents and answer their questions about if you're going to parent or look at starting an adoption plan, think about how you feel about raising a child. Decide how you feel about becoming a parent. Once you're aware of where you stand, it'll become easier to talk about your feelings and choices.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Can you afford to care for a baby?
  • Are you ready to take on the responsibilities that come with having a child?
  • Is your baby's father involved and ready to help out?

2. Find the Right Time and Place to Talk

So that you can have a calm and loving chat with your parents, pick a time and place that'll give you privacy and enough time to talk.

So, make sure you don’t have anywhere you have to be and choose a private location. That way, you can share your feelings and hear theirs openly without having to worry about strangers overhearing the convo.

3. Stay Calm and Patient

Will your parents be surprised that you're pregnant? Then, don't be shocked if they get upset or emotional. Your parents may feel the same way you did when you saw that positive pregnancy test.

Wait for them to absorb your news. If you're mature and ready to cope whatever decision you make, they'll probably come to terms with the situation more quickly.

4. Schedule Another Time to Chat

The first conversation you have with your parents about your surprise pregnancy might not go as planned. You might find that the emotions are running too high, or you may have been interrupted. So, make sure to plan for another time to talk. Your pregnancy news will have time to sink in, and you’ll have a chance to consider your options more fully.
