Eating healthy during pregnancy is so important for the health of your baby. Start eating healthier as soon as you learn you're pregnant so that you can give your baby the best start possible in life. Pregnant women need higher levels of vitamins. To make sure you and your baby get the vitamins you need, eat fortified foods that are high in vitamins like calcium. Many cereals and orange juices are enriched with vitamins.
Folic acid is another essential vitamin to take for the health of your baby. Start taking prenatal vitamins as soon as you get pregnant and keep taking the supplement during your pregnancy. Some women find that prenatal vitamins make them feel sick to their stomach. If you find this to be the case, try taking them with food. One of the key ingredients in prenatal vitamins, folic acid, helps prevent birth defects. You can also get folic acid from foods such as beans, green leafy veggies, peanuts, OJ, peas, asparagus, and broccoli.
It's smart to limit how much sugar you drink and eat during your pregnancy (and anytime, really). But avoiding sugar now helps you keep a healthy weight during your pregnancy. Avoid soda and junk food: they're low in nutrition and high in calories. When you crave something sweet, try some fresh fruit.
