Here are some tips about making good choices when you dine out during your pregnancy:
Choose the right restaurant. Some places are better for pregnant women than others. Choose the restaurant while keeping your pregnancy nutrition in mind. If you’re going out to eat with others, chime in about your need for a restaurant that fits your needs. It’s a good idea to check the restaurant’s website to see if their menu is healthy.
Order smart. There should be something for you on every menu; starting with a salad is always a good idea. A salad will allow you to get leafy greens and also ease your hunger somewhat. Or, you can start with a bowl of healthy soup (such as gazpacho, vegetable or tomato.) For your main dish, try something that’s roasted, grilled, baked, poached, or steamed. And fish, seafood, poultry, or meat dishes are good protein sources…just make sure to ask that they go light on the sauce. If you don’t see anything that looks healthy on their menu, create a special order. For example, you might ask if you could get a fruit bowl instead of french fries.
Pick a healthy dessert. Most restaurants will have healthier treats on their menu (such as fresh berries and a scoop of fruit sorbet, for instance). But if you’re craving chocolate cake, go ahead and indulge, but maybe split it with the people you’re dining out with.
