How to Find Adoptive Parents

If you are pregnant and not ready to be a mom, but do want to be sure that your child has every chance at a wonderful and happy life, adoption may be best for you and your baby. A first step in the adoption journey is to think about the type of family you would like to choose for your child, and then find adoptive parents who best fit the dreams you have for your baby’s future.

So, just how do you find adoptive parents? The best way is to get help from an adoption expert who has your best interests in mind. When working with an adoption coordinator, you may pick the parents out yourself, which can involve speaking with and meeting them, or give a list of what you’re looking for to your coordinator if you would prefer that she pick for you.

When choosing a family, there are a lot of important things to consider: Religion, profession, if there are siblings, whether one parent will stay at home with the baby…These are just a few of the things you might keep in mind. The more families you have to choose from, the more likely it is that you will find the perfect match for you and your baby.

Lifetime Adoption has a nationwide listing of parents waiting to adopt, and more are added all the time. To find out about these families, you can call Lifetime at 1-800-923-6784, or you can look at the Lifetime website. On the website, you can search for families by where they live (you can look at any state, not just where your own), or by using a keyword of something that is important to you. For example, if you care about the religion your child will be raised in, you could do a search for “Catholic” or “Baptist.” Or maybe you want to choose a family where one parent is a teacher or doctor; those are examples of key words you could search for, too.

If you see a few families (or more!) that interest you, your coordinator can send you more information via mail. They come in a plain package that doesn’t say adoption on the outside, so you plans remain secret.

Whether you pick the family yourself or have your coordinator choose for you, finding an adoptive family for your baby is a great way to provide the best future possible for your child. And remember, it’s never too early or too late in your pregnancy to start looking for that perfect family!
