Is It My Fault I'm Still in the Adoption Wait?

Posted by Guest Contributor on December 12, 2019

Today's article comes to us from Elizabeth Laing Thompson, the author of When God Says, “Wait” and When God Says, “Go.” She writes at LizzyLife.com about clinging to Christ through the chaos of daily life. As a minister, speaker, and novelist, she loves finding humor in holiness and hope in heartache.

Elizabeth lives in North Carolina with her preacher husband and four spunky kids, and they were totally worth the wait. You can connect with Elizabeth on her author site, on Facebook, and on Instagram

The summer after our third anniversary, I turned to my husband and said, “And now, let there be babies!” Kevin looked at me with vague panic haunting his eyes, but said, “Okay! That sounds fun. I think?”  We expected to just get off birth control, light some candles, and four weeks later, do a happy dance around the bathroom, positive pregnancy test in hand—that’s how the grow-your-family thing seemed to be happening for all our friends. Only it didn’t happen that way for us.

Perhaps you began your adoption journey after a struggle with infertility; perhaps the Lord has simply put it on your heart to open your home to a child. Whichever route led you to pursue adoption, you must have quickly learned that the time table is out of your hands—and often involves a season of waiting. The complex and emotionally draining process of growing your family can seem to stop and start so many times you end up with whiplash—not just for your feelings, but also your faith!

How to Find Purpose in the Adoption Wait

Posted by Lifetime Adoption on May 29, 2019

When adoptive couples come to Lifetime, most are coming from their own journey of months or years of already waiting—waiting through miscarriage, waiting through infertility, waiting, and waiting to be picked by a birth mother. So it makes sense that one of the most-asked questions hopeful parents have when they hear our Adoption Story webinars is "How long did you wait to adopt?"

When it comes to infant adoption, the wait is usually a focus, and at times a challenge, for hopeful adoptive parents.

Lifetime recently welcomed a special webinar guest, Carly, who shares her story about praying to become a mother, moving past years of fertility treatments, and welcoming her son home through open adoption. She describes how she started to see how every step of her story, including the wait, was a significant part of the journey and prepared her for what was to come. As Carly shares, "There's purpose in the wait."

6 Ways to Celebrate Birth Mothers

Posted by Lifetime Adoption on May 11, 2019

The Saturday before Mother's Day has been traditionally honored as Birth Mother's Day throughout the US. While we think it's totally appropriate to celebrate birth mothers all weekend long, we're taking today to highlight the amazing, brave, loving women behind each adoption story.

One of the most common questions future adoptive parents have to work through, for themselves, is this:

"What would it be like to raise a child who also had another family that loved him first?"

A child's birth mother will always be a special part of his or her story. As most of Lifetime's adoptive parents share, once you get to know the ONE birth mother who has chosen you to become her baby's family, the natural progression is to grow a deep love and care for that amazing woman who made your adoption dreams come true.

So this Mother's Day weekend, as you recognize your own adoption miracle, or pray for the next step in your adoption goals, take a moment to celebrate the brave love that threads between all birth mothers. Here are 6 ways you can honor and celebrate birth mothers today:

Hand-Lettered Spiritual Artwork to Benefit Lifetime Foundation

Here at Lifetime, many of our staff have volunteered their personal time, donations, and talents to help the Lifetime Adoption Foundation serve birth mothers. This week our own Libby Denniston launched a project in her Etsy shop that combines her passion for modern calligraphy with the work we do through the Lifetime Foundation. Many of Lifetime’s followers will recognize Libby as a regular webinar hostess, but behind the scenes she also does a lot of our design for outreach and adoptive parent profiles, among other things.

In honor of Mother's Day this month, Libby hand lettered a verse from Psalm 9, and the proceeds from the sales of this art print will go to helping birth mothers through the Lifetime Adoption Foundation!

This Easter Sunday, Reflect on the Love God Has for Us

Posted by Lifetime Adoption on April 19, 2019

We hope you are looking forward to a beautiful Easter celebration this weekend. He is RISEN indeed!

Easter is a precious time to reflect on the great love that our God and Savior have for us. Through our faith we see just how important adoption is to our Heavenly Father: He chose us to be heirs in His Kingdom! What a family He's creating through adoption in Christ!

Did you know the Hebrew word for adoption means "to place” into a new family? It's intentional, it's permanent, and it's a choice. Adoption was something God PLANNED, as we see in Ephesians 1:5, which reads "God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ..."

The word "decided" stands out. Adoption is a choice made out of great love for a child.
Adoption is love.

Waiting to Adopt: Geoff and Tracy’s Journey to Adoption

Posted by Lifetime Adoption on February 26, 2019

Geoff and Tracy from Texas know what it’s like to wait for a birth mother to choose them. They have been married for almost 20 years, and after spending years trying unsuccessfully to get pregnant, they decided to pursue adoption. Many families decide to adopt instead of undergoing fertility treatments, and Geoff and Tracy did the same.

Tracy was the first one to bring up adoption. At first, Geoff wasn’t ready. He wanted to wait and see if they could have a baby on their own. He was also enjoying his life as it was, with travel and his job. But, as time went on their hearts began to wish more for a baby and Geoff came around to the idea of adoption.

Worth the Wait - An Adoption Story of Faith and Dedication

Posted by Lifetime Adoption on January 31, 2019

Each adoptive parent goes through a different journey, mixed with a wide range of emotions, thoughts, and questions. Even though adoptive mother Bethany and her husband Greg waited longer than anticipated to adopt their son, they continued to show faith and perseverance throughout it all. Bethany remained committed to the adoption process, her faith, and focused on the good.

As Bethany shares, "We are beyond thankful to our mighty God who took us through quite the journey to our sweet Gus, but looking back we can see so many times where He had us go through hard moments to prepare us for the blessing that was to come.”

Bethany and Greg’s adoption story is a testament to the well-known adoption phrase "worth the wait!"
