How Kicking Your Daily Starbucks Habit Can Help You Adopt Sooner

Starbucks and adoption.jpgA hopeful adoptive couple, Kevin and Heidi, always seemed to be just getting back from Starbucks or were at a Starbucks looking at their cell phone while they waited for their daily latte fix.

Over the next few months, we got to know each other. They were worried about how they'd afford their upcoming adoption costs. They were seriously stressed about how they'd fund their adoption. Both Kevin and Heidi worked from home. Each morning, they'd go to Starbucks for a latte and a muffin and then return home.

Their daily habit of a couple of lattes and muffins cost them $14 every day, and around $434 per month. I worked out the math, and over the course of a year, they ended up spending $5,200 a year at the popular coffee chain!

I didn't want to step on their toes, but I did share ways that they could make some changes. I helped them do the math about their daily Starbucks habit.  They quickly saw where they could save and apply that money towards their adoption. Kevin and Heidi hadn't even thought twice about the cost of a little muffin and a mixed coffee drink. It had just become a habit-one that was draining money they needed.

I proposed some alternatives to them and methods that they could use to move closer to their adoption sooner with less stress. Kevin and Heidi brewed coffee at home using their coffee maker. Then, they shook up some milk inside a jar to create a frothy homemade latte. They easily took their $5,200 in savings and applied it towards their adoption fund. What an easy fix!

Kevin and Heidi made a plan: they'd only treat themselves to a Starbucks latte and muffin once a month. It helped to relieve their money stress, and they also saved on gas for their car since they weren't driving to Starbucks daily.

When beginning your adoption journey, realize that you may need to cut out luxuries. Think about what areas of your life where you could save money. Do you get your nails done weekly? Or maybe you have a gym membership that never gets used?  Consider cutting out or reducing luxuries like these. These are examples of just a few of the many ways to save for your adoption fund. With some discipline and planning, you'll be able to adopt sooner rather than later.
