Pamper Yourself During Your Adoption

Posted by Lifetime Adoption on January 11, 2013

I’m up at 5:30 am. Take the dogs out to “do their business”. Get dressed. Put on makeup and try to make something out of the mop on my head. Start the coffee. Boil the oatmeal. Feed the cat. Feed the chickens. Make lunches. Finally it’s out the door to work at 6:45 am (let my husband take over from here)…

This is a typical day in our busy household of five. Life is jumping through one hurdle after another, without tripping. Our timing is like a line of dominoes or a well choreographed dance: everything has to be in step for the other components to function.

Many of you are waiting to adopt a baby for the first time. You might feel busy. You might feel overwhelmed at all that life requires of you right now. However, what you are going through is small taste of the stresses and excitement that parenting brings. Your life is no longer your own. Truthfully, you won’t want it any other way! However, now is the time when you may be able to carve out a little “me” time in your schedule.

The anticipation of waiting can be hard and it is good to stay preoccupied during this season. The key is to glean pleasures out of every day that strengthen and renew your spirit. Once the baby comes, there will be little opportunity to get away and do something for you.

The new baby is going to demand every bit of your emotional and physical attention. You and your spouse will be up every few hours for those infamous nighttime feedings. There will be doctor’s appointments and playgroups, peppered in with all the responsibilities you already have.

Now is the time to spoil yourself in little ways. Carve out a daily treat to refresh and boost your enthusiasm for your adoption journey. Taking a little time, today, can equip you to move forward with confidence. When you are happy, there will be more of you to give to others. The Lord says in Psalms 118:24, “This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Studies show that happier people do more for others and are generally more productive than those who aren’t.

Jonathon Swift once said, May you live all the days of your life.” Are you doing that now or are you filling each day with work and obligations? Here are some ideas to jump start your happiness boost. Try to indulge in one of these pleasures once each day. Be appreciative of your experience and try to mix it up. Remember, a treat is no longer a treat if you have it every single day! Don’t forget. Part of the excitement is the novelty of the experience:

  1. Rent and watch a funny movie with your spouse. Laugh freely. It will lighten your heart and give you an emotional boost. Plus, couple time!
  2. Take ten minutes to curl up on the sofa with a hot cup of Good Earth herbal tea. (love that spicy aroma)
  3. Light your favorite scented candle (mine is called Cinnamon Donut).
  4. Pay the bridge toll for the car behind you . Doing good deeds can be a thrill!
  5. Spend an hour in a large book store such as Barnes and Noble. Mill around. Read your favorite magazines and travel books. Relax in the soothing environment.
  6. Get a pedicure. Most cost between 20 and 60 dollars. Many of the salons provide heated massage chairs. Your toes will look great and you’ll feel great, too. Saving for your adoption? A new nail polish (vibrant color, of course), a warm bath, and nail buff can be a good substitute.
  7. Call an old friend from high school just to catch up.
  8. Meet a friend for lunch that you have not talked to in some time. It will renew your relationship.
  9. Indulge in your favorite food once in a while (notice I did not say every day…).
  10. Fold the laundry while it’s still warm from the dryer.
  11. Take a hike by the sea or up a mountain.
  12. Learn a new skill. Have you always wanted to knit or cook Thai? Sign up for a class and don’t put it off. Another great couple activity!
  13. Take a short nap in the middle of your day.
  14. Plan a spur of the moment, weekend trip!

Do you have any other great ideas? We would love to hear how you spoil yourself. Let us know on Facebook. Have a joyful and indulgent day.
