Are you raising funds for the domestic adoption of a baby? Check out these helpful tips, excerpted from Lifetime Founder Mardie Caldwell’s award-winning book, Adoption: Your Step-by-Step Guide:
Get your community and family involved. Clean out your garage and home and then plan a garage sale. Ask friends, family, and neighbors to pitch in with donations. One of our adoptive parents advertised in the newspaper: “Funding Our Adoption Garage Sale.” Many well-wishers came to buy things and make donations. In one weekend, she raised $750.
If you have unwanted items in your home and garage that are very nice, try selling them on eBay. Items for sale on this site include clothing, books, accessories, jewelry, CDs and videos. Tupperware sells very well, as do camping and boating equipment, antiques, and collectibles. I know of two women who sell used children’s clothing on eBay and make over $1,200 per month each!
One of our adoptive mothers bought items at garage and estate sales and resold them online. She learned to spot rare items including antique books that she bought for a few dollars and sold at $50, the market value. After three months, she had made $4,500. For some adoptive mothers who stay at home, selling items on online auctions has allowed them to pay for half of their adoption expenses.
