Before You Adopt: Work on Your "Someday" List

So in today’s edition of Before You Adopt, we’re sharing about another activity you can do while you wait to be chosen by a birth mother: work on your "I'll do it someday" list!

What do we mean by your "someday" list? This is all those activities and tasks that you've been meaning to do someday. But, for some reason or another, you seem to keep procrastinating and putting off finding the time to tackle them. Examples may include learning to play the guitar, trying the Ketogenic diet, exercising more, learning how to knit, or finishing up all of your half-done scrapbooks. Or, your "someday" list might include items you should do but have been putting off, like catching up on a stack of paperwork, organizing your home, or cleaning your home's rain gutters.

Learning how to care for a new baby (with limited sleep!) can be stressful. After you bring your baby home through adoption, you may not have time or focus to do any of the items in your "someday" list.  You'll be fully devoted to your child's needs, enjoying every smile and milestone. Once you're parents, you just won't have the time to deal with items that you could've finished beforehand. Your baby will be the focus of your life, and you won't want to take time away from parenthood to deal with items that you didn’t want to finish when you had the time.

"I've always wanted to learn how to play the guitar, but I kept putting it off. One day, I finally signed up for lessons, and I'm so glad I did! Every night before we read our daughter her bedtime story, I play her a song on my guitar. Now that she's talking, she sweetly requests certain songs. This fills my heart with so much joy!" Chris, an adoptive father shares.

Remember, don't put your life on hold because you're in the midst of waiting for adoption. Most of all, make sure to tackle your "someday" list today so that you can enjoy being parents once you adopt! Every day is so valuable, so make the most of your time of waiting as you prepare for the child God has for you.
