Before You Adopt: Checking Off the "Honey-do's"

home maintenance.jpgWe hope that you were able to take advantage of the action steps recommended in last week's "Before You Adopt" post about getting ready to talk about adoption with your child.

Today, we're presenting another activity you can do prior to adoption placement: tackle and complete your "honey-do list".

Before you bring home your baby through adoption, it's smart to finish up any outstanding to-do's you have around the house. That way, you won't be struggling to complete them at the same time as figuring out how to care for a baby! Your to-do's may include tasks such as landscaping, painting, removing leaves from the rain gutter, installing new windows, or maybe re-flooring a portion of your home.

Krystal, who adopted a baby girl through us last year, has great advice to give for before you adopt: "I love to organize things, so I created a list of what needed to be done. Then, I added the projects to our calendar. My husband and I both work full-time, so weekends were prime time to work on our to-do's. For bigger tasks like re-painting our home's exterior, I gave us three weekends to complete. It was a great feeling to get all of that done before we adopted our daughter, PLUS we were adding value to our home!"
