Lifetime Adoption is delighted to present another Lifetime adoptive family's story today in our blog series “Then and Now.” Today's adoptive parents are Maurice and Kim from Missouri.
As they began their adoption journey with Lifetime, they shared how excited they were to become parents for the first time through infant adoption.
"We are thankful for the opportunity to adopt! We both knew we wanted kids right away, but weren't able to conceive. We chose adoption to start our family, as we strongly felt that it's God's plan for us," they wrote.
In their adoption profile for birth mothers to learn more about them, Maurice and Kim wrote, “We met on the school bus in middle school and became good friends. Maurice also happened to be the paperboy in Kim's neighborhood. After middle school we went to different schools.
During college we reconnected and determined we still had a lot in common. We met back up in 2007 and have been inseparable ever since!"
After a bumpy road, Maurice and Kim were blessed to adopt a baby boy through Lifetime a couple of months ago!
They share, "We had the wonderful opportunity of getting to know Winston's birthmother before he was born. We got the call that a birth mother was interested in us on May 13th, we remember this well because it was Friday the 13th and that has always been a lucky day for Kim. At this point we had been through three matches where there was a change of heart. We had always heard that when its the right match you will know. With us getting the call on Kim's lucky day this was just the beginning of many signs that this was THE ONE!
We spoke with the birth mother on the phone that night, we were all nervous at first, but the conversation quickly turned into lots of laughter and joy and by the end of the call we felt like we were talking to a long lost friend. A couple weeks later we took at trip to Florida to meet her in person. The visit could not have gone better, we spent several days getting to know her and her getting to know us. We even had the opportunity to go to an ultrasound appointment and "see" our son for the very first time. Everything felt so natural and perfectly right.
For the next month, we continued talking on the phone several times a week and all three of us could not wait for Winston to arrive. On July 10th, she called us to let us know she was going into labor. We flew to Florida right away, but Winston decided he wasn't quite ready to enter the world. It was important to us and his birth mother that we be there for the birth, so we chose to stay in Florida until he decided to make his appearance. During this time we continued to spend time with his birth mom every chance we could get. We even got to feel him moving around in her belly. She included us in so much of the pregnancy it was an experience we will never forget and will always be grateful for the time we spent getting to know each other.
Winston was finally born August 1st and it brings tears of joy to my eyes when I recall that day and the next couple days we spent in the hospital with Winston and his birth mother. She gave us the best gift anyone could ever give us and she will always have a place in our hearts.
There are no words to describe what we feel towards his birth mother. She is truly an amazing woman. We have an open adoption and have continued to stay in contact with Winston's birth mother through phone calls, texts, pictures and videos. We even had a quick visit a week after he was born before we headed home.
We are so excited to experience life as a family of three now. We spent so long trying to speed up time until our son was in our arms, but now we are trying to slow time down and enjoy every second with him.
We cannot thank Lifetime enough for the support they have given us through out our journey to parenthood. The emotional support and the wealth of information they have provided about the adoption experience through articles and webinars and most of all the one on one support with our coordinator has been outstanding!"
