Shawna is an inspiration to all who know her. Her sweet demeanor and calm spirit reflect God’s love, no matter what her circumstance. As a young bride, she dreamed of having a large family. It was crushing for the young couple, when she suffered six miscarriages due to endometriosis. Shawna endured two painful operations to correct the problem. It was unsuccessful. Finally, after many discussions and heartfelt prayers, they decided to contract to adopt a baby. There were some raised eyebrows when they decided to have a party to celebrate their decision. What if they don’t get a baby? What if their plans don’t work out? Shawna responded, “I am going to praise God, because I know that adoption is in His plans for us! Some skeptics think adoption might not work out, but they don’t know my God! His plan always prevails.” Sure enough, ten months later they brought home baby Thomas. His dark brown hair and blue eyes told the whole story: if your plans align with God’s plans, then you will always be on the winning side!

Psalm 23:1-2 tells us, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.” The imagery of God as our shepherd brings to mind the care and love that is given to us on a daily basis. We are simple sheep and need constant supervision to keep us from harm.
Sheep are not very smart animals. Often in a flock, there is one sheep that wants to go its’ own way. It will see a patch of green grass across the canyon and will pursue that grass, even at great peril. The sheep will dive over a cliff to get to the grass on the other bank. It will fall to its death and other sheep will blindly follow.

In 2002, the Hunt family suffered an unbelievable tragedy. They lost their eldest son, Gage, in a skiing accident. The family home had already been decked out for Christmas. The stockings were hung on the fireplace mantel. The tree was massive and beautifully decorated. Scented candles burned in every room. Colorful Manzanita brightened every corner. No one from the outside would ever guess the deep heartache and pain that weighed heavy on the Hunt family home.

Winston Churchill once said, “Kites rise highest against the wind.” What a beautiful picture he has painted for us of rising above adversity. I imagine a little blue kite rising higher and higher towards the sun, as the winds whip and batter it from all sides.

A couple of years ago, I went into our Local Target right before closing. It was late on a school night and few people were in the store. I saw a man unloading boxes and putting the inventory on the shelves. He looked somewhat familiar…. Who was he? At closer inspection, I realized he was the husband of my dear friend, Jane.

Do you feel like you are straddling a fence and can’t get off? Does it seem as if the wood is digging into your backside and keeping you stuck in place? The state of inaction is really a decision; a choice not to act. It can be a bad place to be, when hopes and dreams are on the line. The fear of failure stops many people from taking a risk and following through with their plans.
